Darkest Dungeon 2: Tips and tricks for beginners

The original Darkest Dungeon was infamous for its difficulty and the sequel is has made sure it lives up to the expectations gamers have of this franchise.

The first instalment saw players explore dungeons in a gothic world. The sequel, however, takes a different approach where players will travel to a mountain in a Stagecoach full of their party members.

Whether you’re a newcomer to the franchise or whether you have played the original, Darkest Dungeon 2 has some new features and gameplay mechanics to tackle, so here are some tips and tricks for the game.

Prioritize upgrading the Stagecoach

The Stagecoach is a very important part of Darkest Dungeon 2. Apart from being the party’s only home and mode of transportation, it is incredibly useful gameplay-wise as well. Upgrade it before anything else as it can hold more items, give buffs to your heroes, have more upgrade slots for you to use, etc.

You can run over items with the Stagecoach

In Darkest Dungeon 2, players have some control over movement. You can swerve the Stagecoach from side to side while it’s moving. Make sure to swerve the it into obstacles so that you will gain extra items which are always helpful.

Don’t be stingy with items

Speaking of items, do not be stingy with them because the game certainly isn’t. Items aren’t hard to come by and so hoarding them is not a good idea.

Moreover, unlike many turn-based combat games, in Darkest Dungeon 2 you won’t use up a turn when you use an item so make sure to use them whenever they are needed. It is also a good way of ensuring you have free inventory space to collect more items as you progress.

Pay attention to stress

Stress was notorious in Darkest Dungeon 1 and it has returned in the sequel with just as much intensity. If a character reaches high levels of stress it’s bad news for everyone except the enemies; They will start to disobey your commands, affect their relationships with other heroes negatively, and more. In fact, stress is arguably more important than HP as your heroes can heal while traveling in the Stagecoach.

Target backline enemies

Make sure to take out the backline enemies first as they are more capable of screwing things up for you. They can throw debuffs and do AOE attacks, etc.

Having a Bounty Hunter and or a Plague Doctor in your party can be helpful as they can pull those enemies to the front and stun them respectively, which will allow you to attack them or rearrange your heroes’ positions.

Plan your routes appropriately

There will be multiple paths you can take between each inn. It would seem obvious to take the best path for the current trip, but it won’t always be the optimal path. Each path will have something beneficial to offer; Carefully weigh your options and choose your path accordingly.

While on the topic of traveling, make sure to visit watchtowers and Shrines of Reflections. Watchtowers will help you plot out all the remaining nodes allowing you to plan better trips. Shrines of Reflections on the other hand is how Darkest Dungeon 2 tells the story of its characters while also giving them new skills to use in combat, so make sure to visit them whenever you have the chance.
