Elden Ring: Radahn lore explained

Starscourge Radahn, also called General Radahn is one of Elden Ring’s most beloved characters and is a major boss in the game.

Radahn is one of the most important characters in the game and though it explains little of its characters, there is quite a bit of lore regarding them. Here’s everything you need to know about Elden Ring’s General Radahn.

Background

Radahn, along with Ranni and Rykard, was born from the marriage between Radagon and Queen Rennala.

He liked the crimson hair he inherited from his father because of its heroic implications. He also deeply admired the first Elden Lord, Godfrey and fittingly decorated his armor with lions.

Following Godfrey’s exile, Radagon left to be with his female counterpart Marika and become the second Elden Lord. And because of their marriage, Radahn, Rykard, and Ranni were elevated to demigod status.

The name ‘Starscourge’

Radahn grew to be a huge hulking warrior and it naturally became impossible for him to ride his skinny horse, Leonard. Unwilling to let go of his beloved horse, Radahn studied gravitational magic in Sellia, Town of Sorcery along with Ogha who went on to become Radahn’s longest-serving solder.

Radahn became a genius at gravitational magic and his ability to manipulate gravity itself allowed him to challenge the stars. He shattered the stars and held their cycles, which earned him the name “Starscourge.” This was also when he engraved the gravity crest onto his blades.

Radahn’s soldiers

The Redmanes, Radahn’s soldiers were said to have no weaknesses and appropriate to their name wore red surcoats that had the image of a red-maned lion raising a sword.

At some point, a guest of the Carian Royals became a guest commander for Radahn’s army. Radahn and Jerren swore to make the other would die an honorable death.

The Shattering and the battle with Malenia

After Marika shattered the Elden Ring, her children obtained the Great Runes. The corruption caused by their newfound power resulted in the war between all of her children, called the Shattering, where each one fought to become the ruler of the Lands Between.

From Redmane castle, Radahn led his armies against the other demigods, and in the end, only Radahn and his step-sister Malenia remained. Radahn fought Malenia valiantly, in the battle known as the Battle of Aeonia.

The Scarlet Rot

To defeat Radahn, Malenia unleashed the Scarlet Rot which ruined the land of Caelid and everything in it, including Radahn. The Scarlet Rot ate away at Radahn’s brain and changed him from a legendary warrior to a mindless monster.

He roams the Wailing Wastes and devours the flesh of anyone that dares to enter his vicinity regardless of whether he’s a friend or a foe. Despite the Scarlet Rot infecting his mind, Radahn manages to keep his hold on the stars and rides his beloved horse.

The Radahn Festival and The Tarnished

The Radahn Festival is conducted at Castle Redmane by his remaining soldiers, where mighty warriors gather and try to put an end to Radahn’s misery. The festival is also Jerren’s way of giving Radahn an honorable death.

The Tarnished participates in this festival and successfully manages to defeat Radahn obtaining Radahn’s Greatrune. The stars resume their motion as Radahn is no longer there to stop them, which causes one of them to land in Limgrave, opening a path to Nokron, Eternal City.
