Persona 5: The Phantom X: Everything we know so far

Atlus’ 2016 smash hit RPG, Persona 5 is getting a mobile spin-off game called Persona 5: The Phantom X/Persona: The Phantom of the Night.

After 2 years of its tease, the developers have finally confirmed the game to be coming out, though the release date is still not known. As of now only a trailer has been released and much of the game hasn’t been revealed yet, but here are some of the things we do know.

Who is developing Persona 5: The Phantom X?

Persona 5: The Phantom X is neither being developed by Atlus nor P Studio, but instead being worked on by a studio called Black Wings, which is owned by a Chinese company, Perfect World Games. Though, P Studio isn’t directly involved in the development of Persona 5: The Phantom X, they are apparently overseeing the project.

Gameplay

The gameplay is not going to see any changes from Persona 5, save for the simpler UI that is being implemented for obvious reasons as it is a mobile game.

Mini-games are also going to be present, allowing players to do a bunch of things like part-time jobs, fishing, and baseball.

A bunch of things will be returning like dungeons and Iwai’s airsoft shop.

Story and characters

Unlike the previous spin-offs, Persona 5 Strikers and Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight, which featured the original cast, this game will be focused on a whole new cast of characters.

The nameless protagonist, code-named ‘Wonder’ is a second-year student at Kiba academy, who lives alone in the suburbs of Tokyo as his parents are traveling. When he isn’t attending school during the day, he traverses the metaverse seeking new enemies and personas to fight along with Yanoshik, his persona.

Arai Suwa and Luffy are other names of characters that we know of. The former is code-named ‘Closer’ and is a popular girl at school in the same school as the nameless main character. Her persona is called Awilda. The latter is an owl who is also known as Cattle and can transform into a delivery van like Mona from Persona 5. His persona is called Bob Roy.

There has also been confirmation of the original Phantom Thieves’ appearance in Persona 5: The Phantom X. The story focuses on the themes of desire and the player will have to correct people’s twisted desires and save the world.

Which platforms will the game be available on?

As mentioned earlier, Persona 5: The Phantom X will be a mobile game and will be available on Android and iOS. Along with that, the game will be available on PC too.

It will be a free-to-play game so expect in-game purchases and other microtransactions.

Pre-registrations/ beta testing for the game begins on March 29, but unfortunately only in China.
