Can Gotham Knights re-ignite DC Universe’s gaming franchise?

Gotham Knights is an open-world, action RPG to be set in the most dynamic and interactive Gotham City made to date.

Batman is dead. A new expansive, criminal underworld has swept the streets of Gotham City. It is now the responsibility of the Batman Family; Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin; to protect Gotham and bring hope to its citizens. Let’s take a look at why this game will likely put a smile on the face of every DC fan.

Setting and map

Gotham Knights will take place in Gotham City, but it is a Gotham set under different circumstances. In this version of the setting, both Batman and Commissioner Gordon have been killed, and the city is rapidly descending into lawlessness.

The developers of the game aim to make the map vastly more expansive, detailed, and interactive compared to previous versions of Gotham that appeared in the Batman games.

The game will not feature a day/night cycle as crime-fighting does tend to happen at night in the Batman universe. The game will include open-world exploration through the dark, misty, and maleficient Gotham City.

Gameplay

The Gotham City of the game will feature a base in the Belfry where players can switch between characters, manage their character abilities and perks, and perform other activities. The Belfry will also be home to the Batcomputer and will be a location where members of the Batman family can interact with each other between missions.

The game will feature usable vehicles, with the Batcycle one confirmed inclusion. Players can also fast travel via the Justice League’s satellite.

There will be 4 playable characters; Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood, and Robin. Each of the four will have a unique set of skills and combat styles. The enemy levelling will scale with the levelling up of the characters.

Gotham Knights will feature both a single-player campaign and a two-player co-op mode. The choice of character for any given mission of one of the players will not affect the co-op partner, such that each player can choose the character of their choice.

The game will release around the month of October 2022 for PS5, Xbox Series consoles and PC.

With 4 new characters, a whole new base, a new Gotham, and a brand new storyline, Gotham Knights looks all set to make headlines in the superhero genre of games.
