Summer Game Fest 2023: 6 of the biggest announcements made

Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest was filled with exciting announcements and showcases as ever. We got to see a lot of things in the show’s two-hour run time, and out of them, we have listed here six of the biggest announcements.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

Prince of Persia fans might have lost hope for the Sands of Time remake they were promised, however, they still got something to look forward to at Summer Game Fest 2023; A brand new game in the franchise called Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown was announced.

It’s a side-scrolling action-adventure game that would appeal to Metroidvania fans. Gameplay-wise it will be similar to the previous Prince of Persia games, filled with puzzles, combat, and of course platforming. The game is set to release on January 18, 2024.

Mortal Kombat 1

The next game in the Mortal Kombat franchise got a detailed showcase at Summer Game Fest 2023. Mortal Kombat 1 is going to be a reboot of the franchise and is going to be set in a new, but similar universe. Liu Kang, after ascending to godhood in Mortal Kombat 11, creates a whole new universe filled with characters that will be familiar to those in previous games.

Mortal Kombat 1 will have a new mechanic called Kameo where players will be able to select two fighters — a primary and a Kameo — which will allow them to perform unique attacks. The game is set to release on September 19, 2023.

Sonic Superstars

Sega revealed a brand new Sonic game called Sonic Superstars at Summer Game Fest 2023. The game will be akin to the classic 2D side-scrolling Sonic games of old but will have a 3D art style. Players can take control of Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, and Amy and race through stages either alone or in co-op which supports up to four players. An exact date for its release hasn’t been revealed yet, however, we do know that it is set to launch in the fall of 2023.

Alan Wake 2

The first Alan Wake wasn’t as successful as some of the other horror games at the time, but it did manage to garner a cult following, and now a decade later is getting a sequel.

Summer Game Fest 2023 showed off a bit of gameplay from Alan Wake 2 which is going to have two playable characters — the titular protagonist Alan Wake and a new character named Saga Anderson — who will both have equal playtime. The gameplay will supposedly be akin to survival horror games like Resident Evil and is set to release on October 17, 2023.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 made yet another appearance, this time in Summer Game Fest 2023. We got to look at the game’s official box art which shows Peter Parker and Miles Morales in action; the duo shooting their webs against a backdrop of Spiderman’s classic red color. More importantly, a release date was revealed for the game: October 20, 2023.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Arguably the biggest announcement made at Summer Game Fest 2023 is Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth; a sequel to Final Fantasy 7 Remake. The game is set just after Cloud and his companions leave Midgar and will see them visiting iconic locations from the original game. Square Enix hasn’t revealed a release date yet, but they did mention a release window which is going to be sometime in early 2024.
